Dear Colleagues,

Helene Visentin and I are pleased to announce that Five Colleges, Inc. has awarded funding for a new Five College Faculty Seminar in the Digital Humanities. We are planning to host five events throughout the school year and would like to invite you to join our group and participate in what should be some lively discussion about the state of Digital Humanities as well as a way to build up a network of digital humanists in the Pioneer Valley.

Our first event is scheduled for Thursday, November 9th at 5:30pm in the DuBois Library room 1920 on the UMass campus. We want to keep this first meeting rather informal and have a discussion about the recent article about digital humanities shortcomings that recently appeared in the Chronicle of Higher Education (attached). We would also ask that everyone introduce us to a digital project or tool that has inspired you so that can share ideas of what kind of quality work is happening in our fields.

In future meetings, we hope to have guest speakers and possibly a few hands-on workshops, but also seek your input for ideas on how to best use our time together.

Please RSVP by sending an email to jon@history.umass.edu so that we can order enough appetizers.

Lastly, please circulate this email to anyone you feel might be interested, since we do not yet have an extensive list of faculty in the area working on digital humanities projects. As a part of our first meeting, we will establish a new listserv dedicated to the 5-College-DH group.

We hope to see you next week!

Best wishes,
Jon and Helene
